What these numbers mean

This is a public information service, not an operational control system. Readings can be delayed or revised by their publishers. When fresh data is unavailable, the site keeps the last verified reading visible and tells you it is stale.

Does this cover the whole UK?

The operational figures cover Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate electricity system, though the Moyle interconnector appears in cross-border flows.

Why don’t generation and demand match exactly?

The official datasets use different definitions and update times. Embedded generation, station use, storage and network losses can also create a small difference. The site shows the figures as published rather than forcing them to match.

What counts as renewable or low-carbon?

Renewable means wind, solar and hydro. Low-carbon adds nuclear. Biomass and imported electricity are shown separately because their carbon impact varies.
